Oracle server behind firewall - can't create Net Service Name

We have an Oracle 8.1.5 database server behind our firewall. I've installed the Oracle 8.1.5 Client components on our web server (outside the firewall). The firewall is configured to allow any requests from the web server through, and the web reports are only accessible through SSL. But I haven't been successful in configuring a Net Service Name at the web server - "listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in the connect description". The request is getting through, because I'm seeing the error message in the Oracle server log file. Any suggestions? Received on Thu May 11 2000 - 00:00:00 CDT
