Putting a Tablespace in HotBackup Mode prepares the tablespace for beeing backuped by an external Backuptool. Without switsching to hot backup mode the backup of the datafile would be inconsistent because of its impossible to reconstruct changed Oracle-Blocks. This is due the external backup-toll backsup OS-  but NOT Oracle-Blocks. For this reason in Hot Backup-Mode the whole Oracle-Block is backuped when a transation modoifed it.

With Oracle8 you can use revovermanager. You need not to switsch the tablespace in Backup-mode because rman read the complete Oracle-Block frm the SGA.
