does datatype DATE stores fractions of seconds (Oracle8i)?

For some reason I have to migrate from Sybase to Oracle. Now it looks like that Oracles datatype DATE
doesn't have fractions of seconds like Sybase DATETIME (04-03-2000 09:08:12:587). Is there a way to store
fractions or do I have to use a workaround like storing the fractions in a separate int-column (which is not nice) ?

Any help is welcome! Thanks

Carsten
