we re using Clientsoftware (app 100 users) accessing Oracle over odbc. There are no technical problems and performance is for our tasks also ok. You are also able to access Unix(we have Linux) without problems

but - you have a lot administrative efforts. You have to install Odbc driver, Oracle client software your MSWin application and over the years you get problems because Windows computers after same months never installed equaly - so my experience is that you have a lot of trouble with dll's heaps of versions of odbc drivers and if you change your database-server(different IP) you have to configure the clients tnsnames.ora and so on

We have start to migrate to a citrix terminalserver on which the VB-application is installed. And all User can acces apllication via browser in intranet. So now i have only to administrate one terminalserver + databasesserver and not 100 clients
