You mean you've never backed up this database!?! Get your resume ready.

With DLT I've used a rule of thumb of 10 GB/hr. With 70GB tapes, you could put the whole system on 3-4 tapes. You can either get an autoloader or put four tape drives directly on your system.

If you're using RMAN and Network (both come free with your database server), you will have to manually move the tapes in and out of the loaders.

If this is supposed to be a 24x7 system, make sure you have some replication strategy! You will need at least 12 hours at a stretch to back up the system once a month--with all four tape drives. Could it take less time? Maybe.

Once you have a good, full, monthly backup, you will want to back up individual table spaces every week. I would also backup your archive logs hourly if you can. If your archive logs are on a different disk than the rest of your database, they will still be available when one of the other disks crash.
