auot-escaping single quotes!?

I've always had to manually escape single quotes when inserting values in a varchar2 field, but recently -- out of the blue, as near as I can tell -- Oracle took it upon itself to auto-escape some of the tables for me. So the string "I'm happy" ended up as "I''''m happy" -- I escaped the ', then it got re-escaped again by Oracle.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? I'd much rather believe it's some problem in my code than trippy behavior by the DB, but I can't find anything on MY end to cause this.
