It is 7690 - we got a screen capture of it - thanks for looking through your docs - I couldn't find what they did with their install guide, and the errors and codes book said that anything in that range would be in there... Our VMS admin however did find a page on the compaq site that talks about the service involved, and it is memory related - however, he knows barely more about VMS than I do (scary isn't it). I will check the permissions on the file though, as I created a copy of it as myself and edited it, and then gave it to the admin for him to replace the other with after he got the mem installed. Maybe he was logged in as himself or system or something. Thanks for the tip.
