Starting DB in Oracle Personal Edition

I am very new to Oracle and just installed Oracle Personal Edition 8.1.5 for Win98 with the default sample database. When I try to launch 8i Navigator or SQL Plus I get a little dialog box with title "Oracle8i Startup" containing the text "Checking security...". It in turn pops up another dialog prompting for a password. I also get this when I execute "Start Database" from the Start menu or launch ORASTART.exe from the bin directory.

I have no idea what password it is asking for. I rooted through the "Oracle8i Personal Edition Getting Started" doumentation, found a list of all the users installed with the sample database, and tried all of their passwords, but none of them worked. I also found no mention of this dialog popping up in any of the documentation.

Can anyone give me an idea what password it wants?

Thanks,
