i had the same problem, along with a few others...
first, i heard from someone that worked at oracle that this version will only
run (hmm) on RH 5.2...
im running slack4 with glibc2.07; i managed to install the DB by copying
/cdrom/orainst to a dir on my HD, edited unix.stp, find the block of code
that checks for the key (search for passwd) and comment it out (with /* */).
