One tip. Check the registry keys.
I switched from Oracle 7 to 8i recently and all I changed was some of the registry keys.

[under software - Borland]
BDE keys
DLL "SQLD_ORA.DLL"
DLL32 "SQLORA32.DLL"
VENDOR INIT "ORACLIENT8.DLL" ODBC keys
DLL "IDOBC01.DLL"
