I couldn't make it go either. Seems to be a RedHat thing, somehow related to their "sysconfig" tools. I *AM* going to rip all that crap out one day, and just use normal, sensible, workable, scripts. In the mean time, I put the oracle startup stuff in the network start script, and oracle shutdown in, I think, the cron script. Could not get RedHat to start or stop oracle any other way.
