Basically, Oracle does not support anything with version 6.0. For a while, we tried to use a version 7 or 8 database in place of our 6.0 database and there is no method of communications. We have completely upgraded our system in OS and Oracle.

To get the information from the old, as someone already said, exp the database, copy the file over to the new system (if you want, compress works very well on the exports) and re-import it on the new system. You can do every table, tables based upon a user (our method) or name the tables you wish to export. The one item that I have found is you do NOT want to use the Compress table feature. When we do that, our system runs at about 1/8th the original speed.

Lastly, be forwarned. Exporting from 6.0 and importing on 8 seems to be just fine. Three times now, I have exported from 8.0 and re- imported, and the import hung. I have never determined why this is, and have never called Oracle support. The background DB process spins like mad, nothing appears to be added to the database, and it never ends. (Typically our import takes 2-3 hours, depending on system. We let several go for 48 or 72 hours, and they still don't end. That's an endless import!)
