Hi Bill,

Depending on the nature of the database, this both looks like career suicide and a sure way to get into chapter 12.
That said, get:
Oracle8i the complete reference
and
the Oracle 8(i?) DBA Handbook by Kevin Loney immediately.
I would definitely attend the DBA course, and I would definitely start to RTFM before you do anything, especially the Oracle Concepts Manual. I would also subscribe to http://technet.oracle.com (free) and get a decent Metals support contract, so you have access to Metalink.
