I don't know SCO Unix but on Solaris and Ultrix there is a file called /etc/nsswitch.conf . If SCO supports nsswitch.conf you can configure your SCO box to lookup /etc/passwd first before checking NIS. So you can leave NIS running to support all your other stuff.
