Calling UNIX Script from PL/SQL

Calling a UX shell script from within a pl/sql block seems like jumping through hoops. Besides using DBMS_PIPE, PL/SQL External Procedures or jumping out to SQL prompt, is there any other way to do this? I'm using Oracle 815, running on Solaris Sun Sparc. Please share your knowledge.

Thanks
