Oracle 8 column naming rules?

I've searched the App Developer's Guide, Concepts, Admin's Guide, Reference, and
SQL Reference at technet.oracle.com, but I cannot find any specifications for
creating legal column names in Oracle 8.



I'd like to know the maximum length of column names and what characters can be
used.  Pointers to relevant FAQ's or documentation appreciated.
