It seems that a combination of the both methods is the best :

• use WHENEVER SQLERROR EXIT 1 to stop the process
• and, if the return code of sqlplus is 1, take from your log the last line begining with 'ORA-' to get the error.

You can even use a different number by stage (1 ofr the first, 2 for the second, and so on). I'm
not sure, but I think you can use a variable too.
