Greetings,
You didn't mention what version of 6 you're on, but if you're 6.0.34 or before, you'll need to upgrade to at least 6.0.36, then to 7 (as someone else stated - 7.3.4 [for full Y2K compliance, you'll want to put the 7.3.4.4 patch on]), then to 8.
Actually (and I may be wrong about this) - you may have to go to either 7.1.6 or 7.2 first beofre 7.3.4 - you'll want to check. Several years ago I did a 6.0.34 to 7.1.6, but I had to go to 6.0.36 first, then to 7.
Have you attended any Oracle8 training, such as the 'New Features For Oracle8 class'? - I would highly recommend that, because if you're going to endure torture - why go from 6 to 7 to 8.0.5 to 8.1.5(8i) - if you can, go from 7 to 8.1.5 without bothering with 8.0.5. Oracle 8.1.5 offers many, many features, especially in comparison with Version 6.
There are two ways you can go with the upgrade from 7 to 8 - either the Migration Utility or the Export/Import method. The path you choose depends upon the size of your database. The documentation recommends the Migration Utility if you have a very large database, because of the time. However, the Export/Import will convert the Oracle7 ROWID format to Oracle8.
Take care.
