Single-tier ODBC Drivers for Unix ?

I've searched diligently for a single-tier ODBC solution for Unix to no avail. I have an ex-M$ app (ODBC) that I want to run on a Unix box (Linux, AIX, Solaris) and connect to an Oracle or Informix database running on the same box. Now, I've found numerous middleware solutions but that does "didly" for my scenario. Merant has such a driver for Informix on Linux (downloaded for free from Intraware) but a call to them today revealed that they have no Oracle driver of this class and have no plans to produce one. Everyone's jumped on this middleware bandwagon and that's just about the most stupid thing I've heard in some time. Is anyone aware of a single-tier solution, available today, that will allow me to access an Oracle or Informix database running on the same box? If I find the answer to be a unanimous "no", I'll finish a project I'd already started to code my own.

Many thanks.
