I had the same problem with this query: SELECT USER FROM DUAL;
but the problem was in the dba_users view that contained all rows duplicated. I wrote also to Oracle and it said that likely some index was corrupted. This problem is known but it's not yet resolved. I had to rebuild the db.
This was on Oracle 8.0.5 on Digital UNX 4.0d. Kekko
