Hi Paul,

  1. Go to the oracle website and either download or "buy" a trial copy of Oracle suitable for your PC. (Last time I checked Oracle only charged $4.95 for shipping and handling for trial software -- and the trial software doesn't expire!)
  2. Visit the bookstore and pick up a copy of Oracle Unleashed in order to get an all-in-one how to do it book.
  3. Install Oracle and start working with it.
  4. Visit the bookstore and pick up some serious Oracle reference books. Start with the one book I think every Oracle developer and DBA should have -- Oracle: The Complete Reference by Kevin Loney (Oracle Press, Osborne-McGraw-Hill) and go from there.

You will find that SQL is SQL (thank you ANSI) which means that you shouldn't have a big learning curve in getting to the point where you can develop working programs. Once you start getting things to work effectively it is time to start digging in and learn how to make them work efficiently. Learn how to use the tuning aids provided by Oracle.

Paul Leunissen wrote in message <37cc4368.0_at_flint.sentex.net>... Hello all

I have been investigating how to go about getting in Oracle - and am finding my self very confused. So far I've read about OCP, ASE, MASE, and the like. My question is this - how would someone with some database experience (Access. P/CIS) go about becoming a proficient Oracle user/developer.

Thanks in advance....

email responses are appreciated.
