I've just tried this EXACT code on one of our production Oracle 8.0.3.0.0 machines in another department and it works just fine. Now I'm REALLY confused. The box on which this problem occurs is an Oracle 8.0.4.0.0 machine which has just recently been configured (recently meaning "within the last 2 months").

Again, thanks in advance for any assistance or information any of you can offer.
