IO Block Size

It is mentioned in the Oracle document that the OS I./O block size should be a multiple of the Oracle data block size. But the admin tells me that the UNIX block size is only 512 bytes much smaller than the data block size which is normally 4k or 8K. Do I misunderstand something?
