IDEF1X is part of a modeling methodology (IDEF) used to map processes (IDEF0) and then be able to model data (IDEF1X) based upon the business logic captured within the process model. There is an overview of the IDEF concepts and methods at http://www.qd.cl/WEBPAGES/IDEF/IDEF0/idef0.html and http://www.qd.cl/WEBPAGES/IDEF/IDEF1X/idef1x.html (with a brief review of the history behind them). It and the IEEE data modeling method (sometimes referred to as the crow's feet method) are two of the more popular ones out there (although I'm sure there are others).
