Database Link problem

I have a user who is issuing a query to a remote database using a = database link. The local database is version 8 and the remote database = is version 7.3.2. The query works, but when trying to issue a hint in = the query to the remote database, the optimizer ignores the hint and = still does a full table scan. Any ideas?
