David,
You never said if you were running this new download on the same computer you are trying to connect to the database with. IF you are on the same computer.... be it NT or Unix try entering in SYSTEM for user name and MANAGER for password and nothing for host string.

If you are NOT on the same computer as the database then you have to get your client software configured. If you have SQL*Plus running I suspect you have gotten that far but you miss setting up the SQL Connect string. I usually point someone to the SQL*NET Easy Configuration Program to create a host connect string. It prompt's ya through the basic pieces to make your connection.
