What sort of mainframe have you got?
We had trouble shifting some data from a Unisys 2200/400 to Sun Solaris, mainly because of the 9-bit Unisys byte, and the special Unisys character sets.

We were able to use FTP once we got that set up on the DCPs, the Unisys FTP did the re-coding to ASCII quite well. Had to write code to handle binary data though.
