How to find character set the database is using

Does anybody know how to find specific character set Oracle database is using (such as "WE8ISO8859P1")? I did "show parameter NLS_LANGUAGE" but only got "AMERICAN" (too vague). Making backup controlfile to trace did not show which character set the database is using either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
