public synonym

Hi, can any of you Oracle experts out there help me out?

I can not view a public synonym, v_contact. But I am able to view another public synonym, v_person.
I noticed that v_person is of both synonym-type and view-type, while v_contact is of only synonym-type. Do I really need the view privilege to the VIEW object in order to view the SYNONYM?
