Hi Edgar,

The nature of the jobs is quite different. I would recommend that you pick the one that best suits your personality. While it is certainly true that you can make more money as an Oracle DBA you can earn enough as a developer so that money shouldn't be the most significant issue. (Being a materialist there is no way I would ignore money, but YMMV.)

    (Flame suit on)
It is easier to be a Developer than a DBA. You don't have to learn as much, your progress is measured in a positive light (your programs work) rather than in a negative light (your damned database crashed) and you won't get nearly as many late night phone calls from frantic operators. You will also find that the nature of the work is different. Developers get paid for what they do, DBAs get paid to prevent bad things from happening. As a result Developers are always busy doing things and DBAs who should be spending their time researching and thinking look like they aren't doing anything -- unless a crisis occurs. This means that the more successful a DBA is the less the DBA does since a successful DBA has fewer crisis to respond to.

( Now that I have upset all of the Developers and the less successful DBAs I will remove my Flame Suit)

Oh, by the way I am an Oracle DBA. The fact that I am reading and responding to this news group during working hours tells that I have no immediate crisis to respond to -- how boring, how good.

regards

Jerry Gitomer
