Hi,

You can have multiple Instances per Database (called Oracle Parallel Server), but you can only have one Database in a single Instance.

If you think about it, when you start an Instance, using Server Manager, you supply a pfile, which in turns have the name of a database (db_name) and a list of control files. These are cross references to make sure the database details are correct.
