Oracle on Solaris

I am planning on deploying my database and I am confused as to which path I should take. Some say Oracle on Linux is the better option others say SQL server 7 on a Compaq Proliant is pretty fast.

Has anyone had any experience with any of the configurations ? I would really appreciate your feedback.

Also, How is the performance difference between Oracle on Solaris x86 and Oracle on Sun Hardware.
