If it is true that Sybase cannot backup a single tablespace, then it probably cannot recover a single tablespace, either.

Multiple Oracle tablespaces can be backed up in parallel.

With Oracle's tablespace backups, you can leave the rest of the database up while recovering just the damaged tablespace(s). Multiple Oracle tablespaces can be recovered in parallel, if needed.
