I think Oracle have their work cut out trying to explain how to use the Java functionality of 8i. I've been reading all the 8i white papers, and some of the new manuals, but making little headway with it so far. I'm not a complete novice either (e.g. I understand Java, JDBC, servlets, etc.), but I can't get my head around the 8i Java programming model at the moment. For what it's worth, I don't know anyone else who has either. This strikes me as a problem for Oracle.

Java Stored Procedures look like a waste of time for most apps: hardly the OO/componenet model which most people are pursuing! The EJB stuff seems a lot more promising, based on what I've managed to understand of 8i so far.

The question of when to use 8i standalone or with OAS remains. Sounds like lots of arguments between the RDBMS and OAS groups have been taking place in Oracle, from what I hear.

Recent noise from Oracle about OAS servlet support (ditch the cartridge nonsense!) and 8i/OAS architecture convergence is encouraging, but not the fact that it's taken so long for this to begin to be addressed. Meanwhile, everyone's confused.

Oracle have to start explaining this stuff a lot better than they are if large scale adoption is ever going to happen.
