        this was it... i had become so used to running scripts from the command line as `sqlplus user/pass @script' that i forgot that you could just `@script' from inside the tool as well; when svrmgrl didn't accept the `svrmgrl @script' syntax, then, i assumed i couldn't run the script. all is working fine now; thanks for the help.
