Weirder problem with Oracle 8 driver and ADO (MDAC 2)

We have a weird problem with NT4 SP4 MDAC2 ADO ASP and Oracle ODBC 8.0.5: every query returns 0 rows. The problem does not occur with any of the following variations:
- MDAC 1.5

using only ODBC, not ADO
Oracle ODBC 7.3.2 and 7.3.3

Given that the MSOra driver doesn't work with Oracle 8 clients, what does this leave us with? Do we need a newer Oracle ODBC 8 driver? Just what the f**k is MS trying to do?
