Control file pulse

I am running Oracle 8.0.5 on AIX and noticing a 4K block being written to the control files every 3 seconds. This happens even with no system activity and regardless of log_archive_mode. log_checkpoints_to_alert is false log_checkpoint_interval = 10000 log_checkpoint_timeout = 0 I haven't found this behavior on any of my Oracle7 instances. Any help would be appreciated.
