Anyway, there is bug in Oracle 8 Linux when trying to connect a 7.3 database (it crashes sqlplus). Maybe there's the same problem with JDBC OCI8. There's a patch available for this bug, I applied it to my Oracle 8 linux and now I can connect to the 7.3 database running on Solaris without any problem.

I also tried a simple JDBC connection to the 7.3 database using OCI8 driver. It works.
