heheheheheh, I love this, since I am one now. OH, but I'm also a UNIX
Analyst too. So I get twice the fun.

When I was strictly an SA, I loved it when the DBA would try that. Then
it was time to bring out the DBA Humbleizer. Generally little things
like mkfs, growfs, rm, umountall. Then watch the DBA have a heart
attack cause they could see that the system was up, but the databases
was down, or gone. I'm such a shit.
That or else I'd ifconfig the primary interface to a new IP address, and not tell anyone. Damn, that pisses them off.
If your an SA, and you have a DBA that thinks they are in charge, remind them that you hold the key's to the whole system. Shut it down once or 20 times, that generally gets their attention, and their fear factor too. Also, provide them with a copy of "The BofH" series. Tell them that is your training guide, and your code of conduct.
Of course now that I'm both the DBA, and the SA, I don't get to have
much fun. After all, I would never to anything to piss my self off.
Lusers on the other hand are another matter. ;-)

Well, I do try to keep my people informed of what I'm doing. What's
listed above is in good fun. I would never maliciously hurt a system or
database. I have on accident a couple of times, but never
intentionally. However, some DBA's that I have worked with in the past
seem to have this air of superiority about them. I think it comes from
consulting for large dollar amounts. That or else it's a mutant gean
and we need to start aerial spraying for them. Those are the DBA's I
swore I would never be like, and so far I think I've been able to keep
that promise to my self and my users. I work well with our development
staff and try very hard to look at problems from all angles and listen
to all ideas. There is also a real bad habit with some DBA's of putting
up a large stone wall between themselves and the SA. This is dumb, very
dumb. There have been far to many occasions when I have had to spend
hours fixing a system after the DBA added files, or something, or ran a
query that killed one of my file systems. And of course, I was not told
that this was going to be done, and now I have to miss my dinner and
"Star Trek" in order to clean up their mess. Grrrrr, I'll fix them.
Opps, sorry, flash back there. If you are a DBA, talk to the SA. Tell
them that your adding data files, or are going to turn on auto extend
for something. Don't just run it with out knowing what your doing to
that system. Some SA's are not as nice as I am, and that raised floor
is a great place to hide bodies.
