Unresolved symbols in proc

I am trying to compile some proC programs on DEC UNIX with Oracle 8.0.5.0 and have get unresolved symbol errors. The unresolved symbols are pread and pwrite. The y appear to be in the libraries libclntsh.so and libgeneric.a.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
