I must pick you up on a point here, because I fear for the future... Especially with people new to the game...

Ok some people use this scripted type of method and it goes very pear shaped...
People often do this;

Oracle archives to the archive log destination. (lets say c:\arch) The contents of c:\arch are backed up to tape. The contents of c:\arch are then deleted!!!

## This is wrong ##

If a log switch happens during the backup of c:\arch and the arch file does not make it onto the tape then you have a big problem... The next thing you do is delete the contents of the directory and along with it the un-backed up arch file. If this happens you have just made a very very big problem for yourself !!!

Please, please please exersize extreme caution !!!

Before doing any sort of deletion of archive log files make sure that the cold backups are good backups and test them !!! I cannot stress this enough !!! Also test the validity of the copied arch files to tape once in a while !!!

Its no good going back to a cold backup (assuming its good) and trying to roll forward with arch files that are corrupt or missing !!! Don't just think that because you are in archive log mode that you will be saved...
