SqlPlus Misbehaving

If I enter an incorrect or invalid username or password when signing in to
SqlPlus, I am immediately disconnected and returned to the OS prompt.  I do
not get 3 attempts.  Any idea why?  I am using Oracle 8.0.4 on AIX.
