Some thoughts:

  1. Get a network consultant in with a packet sniffer to check on the possibility that packets are being dropped.
  2. That the "program intermittently fails to execute certain tasks", but other tasks are performed reliably, suggests a program problem. Of course a network problem is still a strong possibility.
  3. Ask for a list of other companies that are using this product. Call individuals on that list. Determine if they are also having problems.
  4. While you are talking with persons on the vendor's list, make sure you know their network environment: NT4/Netware/SPX, Unix/IP, NT4/IP, etc.

We have a product that works fine in an IP environment, but has problems when running on an IPX/SPX network.
