Hi Pete,

are you complete shure you did an export ORACLE_HOME and export $ORACLE_SID ? What shell do you use for root? Try another one. Ksh or so. Look inside the root.sh.
If i remember correct it produces an entry in /etc/oratab which says yes or no to dbstart and dbshut. Plus an entry in /etc/services: listener 1521/tcp. Hmm and some user switching?

I'd set the variables direct in a copy of root.sh if it doesnt work and run this one.
