Hello,

We are planning to use Developer Server to deliver Forms through client browsers in a SCO Unixware 7/Win95/Macintosh environment but currently are testing in a pure Windows environment (NT for the 8.0.4 database, Web server 3.0, and Forms server -- Win95 desktop clients). Although we have not yet really put such a system through its paces, we have done a bit of experimenting, and here are my subjective personal impressions:

  1. straightforward system setup 2. reasonable performance 3. GUI behavior is a little quirky without Oracle's JInitiator (combination of Oracle's proprietary versions of the JavaSoft java plug-in, JVM, and bug-fixed JDK). For us, JInitiator has so far worked flawlessly, making windows and dialogs look nicer, improving mouse control, updating LOV's as you scroll, etc. Unfortunately, JInitiator is only available for Win95/NT. Supposedly, Oracle is working together with Apple, IBM, and other companies to bring their JVM's up-to-snuff, but you should look into this. I do know that Apple has been investing some MAJOR effort into upgrading its java implementation, which has been pretty pathetic in the past but figures to be one of the best on any platform in the near future with MacOS 8.6, 8.7, and X. As a Mac owner/supporter, I have been patiently awaiting this improvement and hope it is a success. 4. GUI java client applet appears to be solid and reasonably bug-free as far as communications with the Forms server is concerned. 5. Likewise, the Forms server appears to be quite reliable regarding communication with both the java client applet and the Oracle database.

I hope this helps.
