SQL Login Error

When trying to login to SQL*Plus, I am only given once chance to type the password correctly instead of 3. If I key it incorrectly, I get the standard Invalid Username/Password message but then get dropped straight back to the OS. I am running Oracle 8.0.4 on AIX 4.2.1, on 2 different systems, and it is happening the same way on both. What am I missing?
