This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.soft-sys.help-desk This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below.

RATIONALE: comp.soft-sys.help-desk

Help desk software is a class of programs that aid in the operation of support facilities such as Technical Support Call Centers and Customer Service Centers.

Help Desk software is currently discussed in private mailing lists and sometimes in newsgroups such as comp.databases. The mailing lists are not open and are usually restricted to a specific brand of help desk software. comp.databases is used to discuss the issues surrounding the database used to store the help desk data. However, there are several business and technical issues peculiar to the help desk arena.

Companies such as Clarify, Scopus, Siebel, Vantive, Remedy, CA, among others are producers of major help desk software packages.

CHARTER: comp.soft-sys.help-desk

For the discussion of help desk software. The theme is open to the discussion of all help desk and support software systems as opposed to being exclusive to one vendor product. This medium is offered for those with an interest in evaluating, developing, configuring and integrating help desk software. General inquiries on various help desk systems are welcome.

Commercial advertisements are not acceptable. Binary postings are not acceptable. Programming code may be posted, provided, they are to support a discussion or answer a specific post.

END CHARTER. PROCEDURE: This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the process.
