Redo log files

Hi,
I'm trying to determine from newsgroups and oracle books how far back oracle redo log files need to be kept.

Would anyone know if I need to keep libraries of redo logs to restore the database to it's present status? Or is it OK to keep the redo log files that belong to each backup instance and not even worry about redo logs, say, from 2 weeks ago?

Thanks for all of your help.

Russ
