Changing the uid/gid for oracle/dba on an Oracle 8(HPUX)

We have a small problem... We're trying to change the uid & gid values for oracle & dba. Anyone out there done this before? We changed all the appropriate entries in /etc/passwd & /etc/group and ensured Oracle was down before we did this. But, after the change, as soon as we tried to run svrmgrl as oracle, it asks us for a password!!
