Oracle 8 on Win 98?

I just received a CD from Oracle of Personal Oracle 8 ( version 8.0.3.0.0) for Win95/NT.
Problem is, my new laptop has Win98. I installed the software and ran through the sample databases, which work without a problem, but whenever I try to connect using ODBC32 from another client, in this case, MSAccess, I get 'ODBC call failed'. I downloaded what looked to be the latest ODBC driver package from oracle.com, but the oracle installer fails to see it... Also, the 'Migration Assistant for MSAccess' bombed, leaving me with an Access database without tables or views. (It wasn't anything important...)
Anyone using Oracle 8 on Windows 98? Is there a patch or procedure I can follow to get it to work? I don't really want to install NT, if I can help it. Perhaps there is a conflicting service on 98 that I can disable?
I'd like to hear from anyone who may be able to help - thanks in advance...
Please also reply by e.mail to "jim at oconnell dot net" Thanks,
